  • Art Deco Ceramics: In Britain

    Andrew Casey

    £31.50

This book focuses on the art deco ceramics that were produced by the British pottery industry during the late twenties and early thirties. It covers all the important aspects of the popular style from its origins in France, its breakthrough in Britain and how the style took on during the early thirties. The background of art deco is examined and how it developed in France during the early part of the twentieth century: how European designers created new shapes and patterns and how these ideas eventually made their way into British design."Art Deco Ceramics in Britain" looks at the well-established factories such as Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd and Minton who produced the top of the range wares for the upper classes and how they were forced, due to market forces, to produce art deco styled wares. At the same time the smaller factories were able to respond quickly to the art deco style, using hand painted decoration, which was an important feature of art deco patterning with the big names such as Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper still being well known today. Also documented in the book are concise, yet comprehensive biographies of many smaller factories that are not so well known today. This listing provides an invaluable source for or ideas for new areas of collecting.

  • Needlework Tools And Accessories: Made In Holland

    Kay Sullivan

    £26.55

This book, with 400 colour and almost 100 black and white illustrations, is the result of years of research. It is the first published history of the tools and accessories used by needlewomen in Holland, from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, describing how they were used and also who would have used them. Many of these tools were beautifully made by craftsmen from precious metals, treasured by their owners and handed down through generations. Others were very simply crafted out of wood, individually carved and decorated by the artisan. Thimble collectors will be delighted with the abundance of illustrations of thimbles, from those simply made of brass, to gold ones decorated with gemstones. Collectors of other sewing tools will welcome the inclusion of chapters on sewing sets, chatelaines, scissors, needle cases, pin-cushions, tape measures, thread holders and winders, tambour tools and knitting accessories. The final chapter is particularly useful for collectors, as it contains a unique list of the makers of Dutch silver and gold needlework tools, with drawings of their marks to aid identification. The book will be especially interesting to collectors outside Holland, as many of the beautiful sewing tools made there have found their way to other parts of the world. They were exported to the Dutch colonies in America and South Africa, and in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries families took all their household chattels with them, including family heirlooms, when they emigrated to America, Canada or Australasia. Overseas collectors may well discover that some of their treasures were in fact made in Holland. This comprehensive book will be an indispensable addition to the library of the needlework tool enthusiast, as all other books on this subject are lacking in this particular area. It contains much new information encompassing the breadth of her expertise, and most of the illustrations are published here for the first time.

  • Graham Sutherland: Landscapes, War Scenes, Portraits 1924-1950

    Martin Hammer

    £18.95

This important book revisits a major figure from a now somewhat neglected generation who dominated the British art scene in the 1930s and 1940s. Focussing on the period from the mid 1930s, when Sutherland established his identity as a modern painter to the 1950s, when his influence began to wane, it portrays the types of work that gave rise to a widespread consensus amongst fellow artists and critics that Sutherland was the most exciting and compelling voice in contemporary British painting. Two particular strands of his imagery are discussed: the landscapes of Pembrokeshire and the South of France, before and after the Second World War; and the scenes of devastation produced for the War Artists scheme run by Sutherland's great friend Kenneth Clark. The dramatic colour and lighting and the metamorphosis of observed form in his pictures of bombed buildings, tin mines and factory interiors, struck a powerful emotional chord in such traumatic times. The book also includes sections on the early 1920s etchings, which introduced certain fundamentals of his art, and on the initial emergence of his portraiture with the creation of Somerset Maugham in 1949.There are also carefully selected works by other artists, past and present, in whom Sutherland took an interest: such as Blake, Palmer, Nash and Masson. Published to accompany the major exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery in June 2005, this long overdue and much requested book, (there has not been a substantial Sutherland show in London since 1982), comprises eighty oils and works on paper drawn from public and private collections throughout the UK and offers a selective interpretation of his painting rather than the usual career retrospective. The exhibition opens at Dulwich Picture Gallery on 16th June to 25th September 2005 and will travel to the Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham in the autumn.

  • Plantsman In Nepal

    Roy Lancaster

    £31.50

In 1971 a small group of botanists and horticulturists organised a three month expedition to the Upper Arun Valley region of eastern Nepal. Their aim was to collect seed and specimens of ornamental and economic plants both wild and cultivated in a remote comer of this landlocked kingdom. This book, originally published in 1981, chronicles the travels and activities of the three-man horticultural team. The journey, which took the expedition to the Tibetan border and back, often followed little known tracks through some of the world's most dramatic and loneliest mountain terrain. During this time it either camped or enjoyed the hospitality of Tibetans in their isolated villages, sharing in their ceremonies, their meals, their dances even. The native vegetation was still relatively undisturbed and the team enjoyed the thrill of walking through mixed woods rich in species including cream-barked birch and silver fir. Elsewhere it crossed alpine pastures sprinkled with blue gentians and the golden rosettes of Himalayan poppies. On one occasion, at 17,000 feet, the botanists wandered on the so-called 'Roof of the World'.Among the many unusual plants they encountered was a trio of high altitude curiosities and rarities - the Snowball plant, the Noble Rhubarb and the Golden Edelweiss. In the twenty-two years since it was first published, this book has been treated as an essential guide by visitors and trekkers to Nepal - especially those heading for the famous mountains of the Everest and Makalu regions, as well as being highly acclaimed by gardeners. Out of print for several years, this new edition has been thoroughly revised in respect of nomenclature whilst much new information has been incorporated. A new chapter 'Back to the Milke Danda' has been added describing a follow-up trek in spring 1973 when the magnificent rhododendrons were seen flowering. Most important of all, however, are the illustrations which make this book a visual treat as well as an exciting record of modem plant hunting.

  • Liberty & Co. In The Fifties And Sixties: A Taste For Design

    Anna Buruma

    £22.50

Over the years since its inception in 1875 as the Oriental Emporium, Liberty's has both been at the forefront of fashion and the decorative arts and has sat comfortably riding on its waves. Its history is at the heart of its image to the outside world. In the fifties, Liberty's tried to subvert this image, but subsequently embraced it wholeheartedly in the following decade. Liberty's beginnings are well-known and most historians of the decorative arts will agree that the company had a significant impact on design in the early twentieth century. However, through the years Liberty & Co. took many forms.History, far from being irrelevant nostalgia, offers us a chance to learn from our mistakes and, indeed, successes. Perhaps now, as, emerging from a difficult recent period, this grand company looks confidently to the future, it is a good time to look back to the Liberty of the fifties and sixties: a less well-recognised moment in Liberty's history, but perhaps no less significant. The 1950s were a frugal time and any retailer who wholeheartedly promoted modern design was taking a risk. In truth, Liberty & Co. probably played it safe, running its modern products alongside the more traditional ones, so as not to scare away longstanding customers. It is perhaps for this reason that Liberty & Co. is not so prominent in people's memories as a 'modern' store in the 1950s. In a way this was a period that prepared the business for its flowering in the 1960s. Almost overnight, the emporium of traditional style found itself not just at one of the best spots in London, but at the very epicentre of the world of fashion: Carnaby Street in the sixties.

  • Chandigarh 1956: Le Corbusier And The Promotion Of Architectural Modernity

    Ernst Scheidegger

    £31.50

Le Corbusier's masterplan and buildings for Chandigarh, capital of the Indian federal state of Punjab, is a landmark of 20th century architecture and urban planning. The Swiss photographer Ernst Scheidegger, founder member of the Magnum agency and famous for his pictures of the artist Alberto Giacometti, travelled to India and to Chandigarh several times in the 1950s, where he took a large number of photographs of the growing new city, its government buildings and also of the local people and their living conditions. From this material he made a mock-up for a book, "Chandigarh 1956", illustrated also with sketches and drawings by Le Corbusier. These equally striking and illuminative photographs are published here for the first time. This book also includes a facsimile of Scheidegger's original mock-up for "Chandigarh 1956". The Swiss art historian Stanislaus von Moos investigates in a comprehensive essay the importance of Chandigarh and of Ernst Scheidegger's photography, and explaining how Le Corbusier's office also took control of publicity for the Chandigarh-project and analyses how the reception of urbanism and urban planning by the media has changed.
