Leonard Clark does not pretend to be an archaeologist or great authority on the Mayan civilisation, but he has nevertheless written an entertaining account of his own journey into the then little-known bush of the Quintana Roo Territory and Campeche State of the Yucatan Peninsula in 1950. Even without the benefit of scholarship, the book is an extremely entertaining and vivid introduction into the life and civilisation of the Maya. If nothing else it emphasises the dangerous and difficult terrain where ruined cities can lie dormant under luxurious growth and undetected for centuries. Clark and his companion barely survived their own under-equipped journey, which he describes as the most trying and dangerous of any during his two decades of exploration in all parts of the world. Clark died shortly after completing the first draft of this book.
