Plein Soleil, (remade in 1999 as The Talented Mr Ripley) is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, and is a striking study of a glamorous and complex psychopath, the portrayal of whom was a career-defining moment for the young, beautiful and ultra-cool Alain Delon. He plays Ripley, an emissary sent by a wealthy American industrialist to save his errant playboy son from a life of decadence in Rome. Insinuating himself into Greenleaf’s existence, Ripley attempts to steal his life, his girl and his money. Alongside L'Avventura and La Notte, L'Eclisse completes director Michelangelo Antonioni’s ambitious 1960s trilogy on doomed relationships in a fractured world. The tale involves a woman, Vittoria (Monica Vitti), who has just suffered the break-up of an imperfect relationship with a staunch intellectual. Piero (Delon), a brash young stockbroker, casts his romantic gaze in her direction and Vittoria’s resolve gradually relents, precipitating a tentative affair. Yet their innermost fears play upon them in ways that go against an honest expression of their love – and against a lasting relationship. A challenging, enigmatic work that won a Special Jury prize at Cannes. Made the year before his death, Un Flic, Jean-Pierre Melville’s final film and his third with Alain Delon after Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge, is the director’s most extreme and underrated gangster movie. Parisian police commissioner Coleman (Delon) is not a happy man, but he does what he can to get through each day, finding solace in his affair with Cathy (Catherine Deneuve), who also happens to be the girlfriend of Coleman’s friend, Simon (Richard Crenna), the head of a gang of daring criminals. As the commissioner’s pursuit of the gang intensifies, so does the rivalry between the two men. In Traitement de Choc, Delon took a break from playing existential loners to portray a charming, amoral Doctor. it's an effective psychological thriller that also offers a comment on medical practice and the exploitation of the poor for the benefit of the wealthy. When Hélène Masson takes up a course of therapy at a centre run by the secretive Dr Devilers, she is at first encouraged by Devilers’ apparent success with his other patients. Soon however she becomes concerned when one of her fellow patients commits suicide. Later, when a serving boys disappears after asking her for help, she realises that something is seriously wrong. Finally, Flic Story, based on the memoir of French police detective Roger Borniche, grippingly recreates a violent post-war crime spree that shocked the nation. When Emile Buisson, France’s most notorious criminal, escapes from a mental asylum, his bloody rampage has politicians and the press demanding results. Delon plays Parisian cop Roger Borniche, who gets the thankless job of finding Buisson and either bringing him in or stopping him dead. Through rooftop pursuits, alley stakeouts, nightclub showdowns, and car to car gun battles, Borniche, a stylish and scrupulously ethical cop, is forced to break the rules he usually only bends.

A fine selection of five films from one of the key faces of the nouvelle vague, who is also one of France's biggest box office stars and a recipient of France’s highest accolade, the Legion of Honour. The set mixes the familiar with the less well-known and contains: À Double Tour (Chabrol, 1959), À Bout de Souffle (Godard, 1960), Pierrot le Fou (Godard, 1965), Stavisky (Resnais, 1974) and Le Professionnel (Lautner, 1981). À Double Tour, Claude Chabrol's first film in colour, is a characteristically suspenseful thriller and also a cruel portrait of bourgeois life. Henri Marcoux, a respectable middle-class man living in Provence with his wife and two children, is having an affair with a younger woman, Léda. His wife is determined to avoid a scandal at any price, even to the extent of breaking off her daughter’s engagement when she learns that her future son-in-law Laszlo (Belmondo) has been sympathising with her husband. Then the unthinkable happens – Léda is found dead. But who is the killer? A bout de Souffle was the film that gave Belmondo his big break. As the petty criminal on the run in a film that was the epitome of cool, Belmondo entered cinematic immortality. Interestingly, the film united four of the initiators of the nouvelle vague - Godard (producer, director), Truffaut (writer), Chabrol (artistic director) and Melville (actor). Pierrot le Fou, a sort of follow-uo to Breathless, is the story of a bored husband (Belmondo) who runs away from Paris to the South of France with an unpredictable but beguiling young babysitter (Anna Karina) after a corpse is found in her flat. After an idyllic time at the seaside they hit the road once more and get by on theft. Belmondo was nominated for a BAFTA for his perfomance in this tragic tale of a romantic couple who cannot escape fate no matter how far they flee. Widely regarded as one of Alan Resnais’ finest films, Stavisky tries to shed some light on the eponymous, enigmatic Russian émigré who scandalised France. Stavisky (brilliantly portrayed by Belmondo) built an empire through a combination of subterfuge, fraud and false identity, becoming, as the more respectably titled Serge Alexandre, one of the most influential and powerful men in France in the period between the wars. As the investigations of Inspector Bonny reveal, his life was the perfect sham, which took in businessmen, financiers and politicians of all persuasions. Features a score from Stephen Sondheim. Finally, Le Professionel is a hard-edged action thriller with a haunting Ennio Morricone score. Secret agent Joss Beaumont (Belmondo) is sent to Malawi to assassinate President N’Nala. At the last moment, the French authorities make a change of policy and betray Beaumont to the Malawi government. After two years in captivity, Beaumont escapes from the African state and returns to Paris to enact his revenge.

However, Hawkins' well-planned attempts to remove Sir Gregory permanently from public life are frustrated by well-meaning vacuum cleaner salesman William Blake (George Cole). In 'Folly To Be Wise' (1952), Sim plays a new Entertainments Officer at a local army camp who attempts to revitalise things by getting rid of the lady violinists and trying to modernise entertainments with chaotic results. In 'Geordie' (1955), Sim plays a Scotsman who takes up a course in Physical Culture, and goes on to become an Olympic hammer throwing champion. In 'Left, Right and Centre' (1959), Robert Wilcot (Ian Carmichael) is the prospective Tory candidate at the Earndale by-election. Travelling down to the town from London, he strikes up a conversion with a pretty young girl and the pair seem to hit it off. It's not until he's photographed carrying her bags along the platform that he discovers Stella (Patricia Bredin) is actually the town's socialist candidate. In 'Laughter In Paradise' (1951), when it's time for the reading of Henry Russell's will, his relatives gather in eager anticipation of the wealth that could be theirs. But they are surprised to discover that their inheritance is conditional upon them each performing a certain humiliating task. Snobbish Agnes (Fay Compton) must take work as skivvy, timid bank clerk Herbert (George Cole) must become a bank robber, pillar-of-the-community Deniston (Alistair Sim) must get sent to prison, and playboy Simon (Guy Middleton) must get married. Will the lure of money be enough to get these characters to go against type? Of course it will.
