Deep intense colour, very young. A floral and very delicate nose with subtle hints of vanilla and cherries. Extremely fresh on the palate with very well integrated tannins. Lovely smooth, balanced and fruity finish. Very harmonious and elegant. A complete wine. Chryseia 2005 was made from a rigorous selection of grapes from Quinta da Vila Velha, Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Perdiz. From a very thorough initial triage, of the 200,000 kg of grapes vinified, a mere 25,000 litres were classified for Chryseia 2005. This was the smallest selection to date that corresponds to 30,500 bottles. 34,000 bottles of Post Scriptum, the second wine, were also bottled. 2005 was an extraordinarily hot year. A dry 2004 Autumn was followed by a Winter with hardly any rain, and Summer was extremely hot and equally dry. The characteristic schistous soils found in the Douro once again proved to be a very important ally to the vines, providing them with water in the midst of a period of prolonged drought. This phenomenon illustrates the Portuguese saying 'ha chuva que seca e sol que rega' (there is rain that dries and sun that irrigates). The extreme heat and drought accelerated the ripening of the grapes in the Douro. The Touriga Nacional at Quinta da Vila Velha was picked at the very early date of the 6th September. The rain that came as a true blessing on the 7th September allowed for perfect ripening and the rest of the Vintage proceded in ideal harvest conditions between the 12th September and 1st of October. Due to the particular weather conditions they decided to favour the Touriga Nacional that represents 70% of the final blend, the rest being made up of Touriga Franca and a little Tinta Roriz. Grape: 70% Touriga Nacional, 25% Toriga Franca, 5% Tinta Roriz.

Appearance: Opaque and purple. Nose: Aromas of eucalyptus give it a freshness and elegance of style. Palate: Rich flavours of sweet blackberry and firm tannins fill the mouth. Finish: A wine of good ageing potential which also has mouth filling soft rich fruit making it attractive for those who enjoy drinking vintage port young. Canais 2007 was selected from two grape varieties, 72% Touriga Nacional and 28% Tinta Roriz. The Touriga Nacional was picked on the 26th September in perfect conditions and came from one of the most mature vineyards of this magnificent Douro Superior estate. To balance this blend and to incorporate some spiciness and freshness, the Tinta Roriz was chosen from a very special vineyard close to the top of the property (350 metres). The Roriz was only picked on the final two days of the vintage, on the 9th and 10th October. Hence, it produced a wine of abnormal fullness for this variety with wonderful fragrant aromas.

Wine Makers Tasting Notes Colour - A very deep intense purple colour, opaque almost blue. Thick slippery 'legs' can be seen on the sides of the glass. This is the classic appearance of a really young high quality port. The deep purple/bluish hue will slowly soften to become dark ruby-red as the wine develops in bottle. Nose - Very clean with good intensity and rich rounded fruit. Some chocolate and prune aromas and just a hint of pepper. Some blackberry and a touch of violet give the wine a good perfume, a lot of elegance and complexity. Palate - A dry finish marks it as very typically Cockburns in style. The acidity gives it freshness. Tannins make it still hard and unyielding but will enable it to age evenly until it reaches full maturity in more than twenty years from now. The wine shows perfect balance between fruit, acid and tannins, so that the structure is classic for so youthful a vintage port. It has a roundness of flavour, it is firm on taste, fruity and 'jammy' with length and grip as the many complex flavours linger on in the mouth. It is a big wine, excellent in quality and has the potential for a long life in bottle. It is undoubtedly a classic Cockburn Vintage. It is difficult to make comparisons at this early stage of the wines life, but so far it reminds one most of the 1970s. If it continues to fulfil this promise it will turn into a very great vintage. We do not as a matter of policy make public either the quantity of vintage port we make or its exact composition. However for the first time over 80% of the 'lote' has come from our own properties. The Quinta dos Canais, which we bought in 1989, has traditionally provided the backbone of Cockburns Vintage Ports, and the 1991 is no exception. An exciting element is that 40% of the blend has come from our Vilarica vineyards, where the vines are planted on gently undulating slopes rather than steep terraces, and in blocks by individual grape varieties. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Roriz from the Quinta de Atyde have all been used for the first time in a Cockburn Vintage. Which shows just how important our recent investments in high-quality vineyards have become. The rest of the component wines have come from properties in the Upper Douro and Rio Torto areas, which, like Canais, have habitually played their part in the make up of past Cockburns Vintage blends.
