In recent decades there has been a flourishing interest in the varieties of English spoken around the globe. In many regions international English has been intertwined with the indigenous language to form a language which is recognisably English but uniquely regional. A long-standing teacher in Sri Lanka and a lexicographer, Michael Meyler became fascinated with the variant Sri Lankan English on his arrival to the country as a language teacher in 1985. He spent nearly 20 years compiling this dictionary of Sri Lankan English. His purpose is to bring an acceptance, as far as possible, to this variation of English in Sri Lanka as it is spoken and used in the 21st century. Inside will be found over 2,500 references to words, phrases and sayings which are typical and unique to this country. These references in themselves speak of the characteristic culture, expressions, and experiences of Sri Lankans. Abundant native quotes and citations emphasise the different nuances that Sri Lankan English carries in comparison with standard English. Differences in phonetics and grammatical structures are explored, and the many illustrations throughout the dictionary give a visual representation of all things peculiar to Sri Lanka. BOOK CONDITION : near Fine : minor signs of shelfwear to edges of book; slight signs of rubbing to covers at top and lower parts of covers; a couple of minor marks at spine; covers nonetheless in presentable shape; faces with preserved whites; apart from printer's smudge to middle of top margins of pages 112/113, the inside pages are in excellent condition and like new; the binding is tight like new.
