William Edward Hartpole Lecky, (1838 to 1903) was an Irish historian. He had a particular interest in describing and discussing the progress of religious and spiritual changes and its effect upon events and people. The full titile of this book is: "History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe." This two volume work focusses on rationalism, in other words, the perceived shift away from superstition and beliefs in the supernatural, in all its forms, towards a more scientific and evidence based way of seeing the world. This is the 1866 third edition of the 1865 original. I have reproduced part of the very detailed contents list of volume one, in photos. This to give an idea of the subject matters covered, and the thoroughness and high academic standards of the author. A reading copy rather than a collectible, because of poor condition of covers; volume 2's cover is completely detached.Both are faded and marked. 14 x 23 cm. 450 pages to each volume. However, the contents are good. No loose or missing pages, no tears or creases. An important contribution to the history of religion and philosophy. Perhaps worth rebinding?
