Thanks to the hard work of the Fulcrum engineers, the only thing the new Racing 1 wheels have in common with the previous model is the name. The two versions of Fulcrum Racing 1 have been further improved for 2010, in both the clincher and 2-Way Fit versions. Certain modifications made to the already high performing 2-Way Fit version have raised the bar again on these wheels, and the clincher version has been radically modified, with weight reduced by a full 121gr. Lightened profile. The clincher model will have a new lightened rim profile achieved thanks to a new production process for the extrusions. This new process enables Fulcrum to reduce the mass of the rim without compromising its structural resistance. This is a big advantage, especially from the point of view of reducing the peripheral mass and therefore the performance features in terms of reactivity. Differentiated profile. The new Racing 1 clincher version will have differentiated front and rear rims: 26 mm of height for the front and 30 mm for the rear. This means excellent aerodynamic penetration for the front wheel and extremely effective power transmission, even during off the seat riding, for the rear. New hubs. The new Racing 1 clincher version hubs are again in aluminium, but compared to the previous version they have been lightened and redesigned to house the new straight head spokes. New spokes. The spokes are brand new, in aluminium with central cross-section of 2.6 mm for both models of the 2010 range. Thanks to these spokes, the new Racing 1™ wheels boast a considerable reduction in weight while maintaining the same values of resistance as the previous version. New graphics. The Racing 1 clincher wheel will have a new graphic look, the same shared by all models of the Fulcrum 2010 Road range. Dynamic Balance™: Unlike carbon rims, all the aluminium rims are joined. The joint, though indispensable, entails a concentration of material in a single point and creates an annoying "jump" effect at speed. Fulcrum® has eliminated this annoying problem with the Dynamic Balance™ patent. The concept is simple and elegant: balance the mass of the joint with a mass of the same weight. For top models, this is obtained by a special operation on the section of the rim opposite the rim joint. For entry-level models, Dynamic Balance™ is obtained by using two oversized spokes in the section opposite the joint. The result is a wheel with perfectly balanced rotational dynamics. It's not by chance that Fulcrum called its family of road wheels "Racing", just as it is not by chance that we push so hard on the pedal with regard to tubeless tyres. In fact, tests carried out in collaboration with Hutchinson demonstrated that a Fulcrum wheel fitted with a tubeless tyre has a rolling capacity more than 31% higher than the same wheel fitted with a normal tyre. This is a huge difference that cannot be ignored by those whose daily objective is competition. Precisely due to the advantages offered by the tubeless tyres, Fulcrum has now decided to extend this technology to the Racing 3 model as well, but they decided to do it in the most advantageous way for the user. Thanks to the special profile of the rim developed by Fulcrum, it is possible to fit both tubeless and standard tyres. This means being able to take advantage of the best features of both solutions: performance, comfort, and seal for tubeless tyres; convenience of use in training for the standard tyres. The Fulcrum Racing 3 2-Way Fit wheels differ from the Racing 3 version also in other aspects. First of all, the weight, as this version is a full 80 grams lighter, a huge difference for this type of wheel. In fact, Fulcrum has used differentiated rims, 24mm for the front and 30mm the rear, so that the front wheel, along with radial spoking, produces perfect aerodynamic penetration. The rear wheel, on the other hand, was developed to instantaneously transmit the cyclist's power, the reason why Fulcrum chose a more rigid 30mm rim together with the now celebrated Two-to-One spoke ratio. Here, too, Fulcrum Dynamic Balance keeps the Racing 3 2-Way Fit wheel perfectly stable even at high speeds. Another difference regards the spokes. Here, too, incredible efforts were made to reduce every single gram without compromising performance and resistance. In this case, Fulcrum kept the same spoking (16 radial for the front and 21 with 2:1 ratio for the rear) but intervened on the thicknesses: 2.2/2/1.6/2 for the front spokes and rear left side, and 2/1.8/2 on the cassette side. On the front of the spokes, Fulcrum introduced the Antirolling Spoke System, which keeps them perfectly in the aerodynamic position and facilitates servicing operations. At the same time, the 26 millimetre thickness is a guarantee of strength. A rim of this type is excellent in terms of resistance and weight. Further lightening has been obtained by milling the material between the spoke anchoring points while the rim is perfectly balanced thanks to Dynamic Balance technology. The spokes are made of aluminium with an aerodynamic profile.
