Two men shared the role of favourite to lead the 1983 British Lions rugby party in New Zealand, both of them hookers for their respective countries: Peter Wheeler of England and Ciaran Fitzgerald of Ireland. Fitzgerald won the race and led the Lions to a 4-0 series defeat. Wheeler, veteran of two previous Lions tours, watched the Lions lose through the eyes of the television cameras. In his autobiography, Wheeler describes the efforts, the sacrifices, the pleasure, the friendships which the life of a leading rugby player offered in the 1980s. As a young member of a London old boys club there was little indication that here was someone who would become recognized as one of the world's outstanding players. But after the 1977 Lions tour, the leading New Zealand journalist, Terry Mc Lean described him as 'one of the best all-round hookers of modern times'. Wheeler captained his club, Leicester, to the John Player Cup on three successive occasions. He was one of the mainstays of England's grand slam season in 1980, yet he was consistently overlooked as his country's captain. It was felt by many that England's failure to appoint him captain robbed Wheeler of the prospect of captaining the Lions in 1983. Outspoken in his views on how rugby should be organized in England, Wheeler's demands for a more competitive structure may point the way forward after the disappointments suffered by the 1983 Lions. The dust jacket is starting to yellow but the cream pages of the text are totally clean.
