Deep, youthful purple colour with a ruby rin. A typical Merlot nose with juicy plum and mulberry fruit, lifted spiciness and hints of dark chocolate and inkiness. The palate offers generous, ripe, pure Merlot fruit with refreshing acidity, structured yet silky tannins and pronounced length and minerality. Soil Type: Selected from 24 year old Merlot plantings situated on clay-rich Oakleaf, Vilafontes and Klapmuts soil. 40% vendage vert (green harvesting cluster removal) at 60% veraison to ensure concentration and even-ripening. Vinification: Grapes hand-picked & selected before crushing. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with partial uninnoculated fermentation. Daily remontahe and delistagefor gentle extraction. A portion of the wine was given extended maceration on the skins for five weeks before pressing. Malo-lactic fermentation proceeded in 300 litre French Oak Hogsheads. Maturation in 60% new Nevers French Oak, 40% second fill Nevers for 17 months before bottling. The Meerlust Merlot 2005 is a blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc for structure. The cabernet merlot blend takes inspiration from the classic red wines of Bordeaux. Cape Mentelle has developed an international reputation for long lived cabernet and this blend seeks to capture the quality of varieties that, when blended with small amounts of petit verdot, cabernet franc and malbec, create a well rounded, full and rich style. Appearance: Dark Cherry. Nose: Lifted blackcurrants with mocha, dried tobacco leaf and hints of lavender lying underneath. Palate: A concentrated palate led by fresh currants and ripe cherries. Forward thinking has taken form in a second tier of reds, blended with Helderberg fruit and bottled under the label KC. 'This allows us to elevate the quality and status of our premium red wines, reserving the very best parcels of vineyard for the Marlbrook and Klein Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon ranges,' explains Adam (Klein Constantia's winemaker (since the 2004 vintage) is 29-year-old Adam Mason). Healthy, deep garnet colour. On the nose is initial spicy - wood scents give way to ripe plummy, Christmas pud' aromas, and hints of cool grown Cabernet. The palate is well structured, but medium bodied. Mouth watering flavours of ripe, juicy red currants and fleshy plums. Wonderful array of classic, cooler Cabernet attributes complimented by velvety Merlot flavours. Judicious oaking has lent an added dimension of savoury flavours to this balanced, moreish morsel. With the correct storage, this wine will continue to mature and evolve for a further 8-10 years.

Very deep crimson in colour. Sweet, spicy aromas of violets, forest hints, dusty mulberries and blueberries with cedar and fruit cake. A lush, concentrated, sweet ripe palate layered with great texture and fruit flavours; intense and complex. Excellent depth and structure, fine-grained tannins and a very long finish. Stephen and Prue Henschke, fifth-generation winemakers at the family cellars at Keyneton, selected Lenswood in 1981 as a new vineyard site, just 50km from their ancient Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace vineyards. At 550m, the Lenswood vineyard slopes offer not only beautiful views over the older vine country, but also higher rainfall and humidity at the right time of the year, cooler temperatures to retain natural acidity, and still enough sunshine to fully ripen the grapes. The Abbotts Prayer label links together the history, religion and pioneers of this mountainous region. This property along Coldstore Road, including the vineyard, was pioneered by T N Mitchell, the first settler, and was originally known as Abbotts Flat. Vineyards were previously established in this area in the late 1800s. Vintage 2005 was early, warm, quick, fantastic quality with good yields - and exhausting. Above average winter rains led into a beautiful spring, with some early November frosts but good flowering weather in late November and early December. Summer was wet and wild, with an amazing roller-coaster of weekly thunderstorms that helped maintain good subsoil moisture. Rains in January were followed by a dry February, and the dry weather continued right through the autumn. Warmer than usual autumnal weather caused an early, compact harvest of above average yields. The late Indian summer lasted into May, well after all the fruit was harvested, at maturity figures, flavour and colour not seen before the 2002 vintage. The quality of the 2005 vintage is sure to be ranked as one of the best on record, after 2002, with all varieties showing strongly. Once again the signature varieties for Eden Valley, ie, riesling and shiraz, performed brilliantly. Cellaring Potential: Exceptional vintage, drink now to 2015. Serving Idea: Asian salad of seared pigeon breast. Grape: 64% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon.
