By 1765 Matthew Boulton, a leading entrepreneur and pioneer of the Industrial Revolution, had built his famous Soho Manufactory on Handsworth Heath. Shortly afterwards, the town plans of Birmingham in the first quarter of the 1800s chart the arrival of the railway; a plan from 1832 is the last glimpse of the city before the arrival of the Grand Junction Railway and other main line stations.Accompanied with informative text and pictures of the cityscape, the many detailed plans contained in this historic atlas of Birmingham are a gateway to its past, allowing the reader and researcher to visually observe the journey of this historic town to city status in 1889 and beyond.

This is a top mountain biking area in the heart of the Peak District. A superb network of off road bridleways and byways, exhilarating downhills, tough climbs, great views, cafes and pubs. When you get back you know you’ve been on a ride!The map shows all the off roads in the area with surface descriptions, technical gradings, uphil indicators, loads of spot heights and useful features such as gates and of course cafes and pub locations. We've highlighted some routes to get you started but the area is so rich in mountain biking that you will soon be using the map to make up your own variations to make longer, shorter, harder or easier! The map is A4 (210 x 297mm) in size and comes in a sealed waterproof cover. On one side is the mountain bike map and on the other side are text descriptions of the suggested routes.These are our suggestions whch are arrowed on the map and described on the reverse.The Mountain Bike Routes: It is easy to use the map to tailor the routes to your requirements - lengthen, shorten, make harder, make easier! Mardy Bum 14 miles A very varied mountain bike route that starts at Hope (and right across from the very mountain bike friendly Woodbine Cafe!). A bit of climbing near the start quickly gets you out in thick of it then a long grassy and bare earth downhill brings you onto some minor lanes. Some more off road then onto the big climb of the day (all on a minor lane; so rideable) which leads you to two sections of very different downhill (the first a wide straight track and the second a more technical descent) then its onwards and back to the finish. Route Profile Pain for Pleasure14 miles This mountain bike route has about a mile of coasting then its uphill, you're going to have to walk some of it (but its going to be worth it), soon you reach some flat then around a corner and your on the start of a superb bit of downhill. Nothing too technical at the top, but enough obstacles to keep you on your toes. The final bit gets a bit stony but keep your nerve and you can do it! A nice flat bit to get your breath back then its more downhill and you start to realise this is really the best sport in the world.Your onto a flatish path now, but an option to detour is there. Climb up into the trees for a fast descent back down to Ladybower. What follows next is a short respite before a climb (all rideable) and then on to the final descent of the day, which could have you screaming for more! Route Profile Rawhide30 miles We would run out of superlatives if we described this mountain bike route. Suffice it to say that it has it all. Climbs that are a breeze, climbs to make you suffer, breezy downhills and downhills you're going to be day dreaming about for weeks. The distance is tough and you'll be climbing about 4,800 feet in total; so you're going to have to be fit, but you can always tackle part of it (its easy to use the map to shorten as required) and save the rest for your next adventure.

A wonderful mountain biking area around Hayfield that includes Chinley Churn. The main characteristics of this area are the many varied downhills that aren't too technical, but for most tough enough! climbs galore to test your fitness and the feeling that you are often out in the wilds when in reality you are never that far from signs of life. Most of the climbs are rideable if you are fit, though you will be pushing (not for too long) in a couple of places. The area overlaps with the Mellor maps and the Edale Hayfield Castleton Map.The map shows all the off roads in the area with surface descriptions, technical gradings, uphill indicators, spot heights and useful features such as gates, cafes and pub locations.Three routes are highlighted and you can use the map to mix n' match sections for lots of variations.The Map The map is A4 (210 x 297mm) in size and comes in a sealed waterproof cover. On one side is the mountain bike map and on the other side are text descriptions of the suggested routes.Information on the mountain bike routes shown on the map: These are our suggestions whch are arrowed on the map and described on the reverse. They are aimed at intermediate to experienced mountain bikers. If you a are a reasonably fit beginner then we would recommend that you use the map to adapt the routes to avoid the technical sections and maybe shorten accordingly. Crank it Up15 miles A great selection of downhills. This ride is a bit of an oddity in that there seems to be more downhills than uphills! However as you'd expect you don't get something for nothing. You get a mile warm up before there's sweat dripping off your nose as you work your way up Chinley Churn. A lovely grassy descent, followed by a short section of singletrack, followed by a technical steep rutted grass descent that brings you to a grass path that leads to Peep O'Day. Then it's soon time to test your brakes again on a track descent that carries on on tarmac to bring you along a valley for the steepest climb of the day, unless you are superhuman this will probably involve about 15 minutes of walking. This is soon forgotten as you progress over the moor and then a truly wonderful flowing descent that should have you bouncing with joy. It's not over yet as a bit of tarmac joins you to another track which after a bit more work gives you a final flying lunge back to lane which winds nicely back to the finish. Oh Fork! 18 miles Up to the heights of South Head before a 700 feet downhill blast. Skirt Chinley Churn, or use the map to take in an extra uphill and downhill, then you're soon pulling into Birch Vale and possibly for refuelling at the cafe. Then off towards Rowarth and the most technical descent of the day, then onto a bridleway over the moors, shortly followed by some sweet singletrack in the heather. A mixture of gritty tracks, grassy sections and a fast descent followed by a short last leg on a lane will bring you back to the finish. A very varied ride that should leave you tired & satisfied at the finish.Spoke to Soon14 miles A mile warm up and then you're faced with a mighty climb. All rideable if fit enough, though that won't stop your legs gradually turning to jelly as you approach the top. A quick breather and then you've soon a challenging steep downhill. A short section of tarmac then links to a lovely singletrack descent. Now all that height you ahve just lost you are about to make up. Out on a lane to get your poise back. Start to climb , nothing to drastic, until you take a left turn for some proper climbing. A short section of relief and then your off-road climbing again. A short section might have you walking but grit your teeth and you'll soon be on your way again. A short hairy downhill then leads to a fast cindery drive before you have an
