This small book has been written with the object of helping the beginner to understand the fundamentals of engineering bench work and fitting, thus providing a basis which may be extended by experience. It is not possible to cover in detail the whole varied field of this class of work, nor is it suggested that a book can do more than supplement actual practical experience at the bench. In an intensive scheme of training, undue concentration may be given to those parts of the work concerned with immediate production, resulting in a lack of perspective. The beginner neither knows where the job on which he is working came from, nor where it goes to when he has finished his particular portion of work on it. It is desirable that the worker should have some general knowledge of the processes involved in order to promote his interest. In fact, for some time his whole concentration will be needed to gain proficiency. But when this efficiency has been obtained, a general interest and understanding of other processes in the production give mental relief to the most humdrum repetition job, resulting in greater all-round efficiency. The hints on the use of tools are drawn mainly from personal experience. The instructions are intended as a general guide to the novice, who will develop his own personal technique by experience. Personality manifests itself in the use of the tools; if, by some peculiar use of a tool, the work is turned out efficiently without danger and undue wear of the tool, etc., then that particular method must be acknowledged as satisfactory, even if it is unorthodox. The author acknowledges with gratitude the loan of illustrations and the help given by the manufacturers.
