Collection of nine classic war films. In 'Twelve O'Clock High' (1949), Colonel Keith Davenport (Gary Merrill) is more of a friend than a commander to his men, a US bomber crew stationed in wartime Britain. After a series of dangerous missions, the pilots are living on their nerves and when Davenport is replaced by the callous General Savage (Gregory Peck), the latter's attempts to whip the crew into shape result in a deluge of requests for transfers. However, young Lieutenant Bishop (Robert Patten) rallies his fellow pilots, and soon they and Savage begin to develop a mutual respect. In 'The Longest Day' (1962), an all-star international cast re-tells the events of the Allied Landings in Normandy in 1944. Events are seen from various points of view, including the Germans', in an epic and spectacular style. Along with the 43 international stars, the film used 23,000 Allied troops and despite costing over $10 million to make, it has now become one of the most successful films of its genre. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Henry Fonda head the cast. In 'The Great Escape' (1963), during World War II, a collection of hardened Allied prisoners are kept in an 'escape-proof' German camp. Led by the 'Big X' (Richard Attenborough), the men formulate a plan for a mass breakout, digging three tunnels - Tom, Dick and Harry. The team behind the escape includes a near-blind forger of passports (Donald Pleasance), a claustrophobic tunnel-digger (Charles Bronson) and the independent American 'Cooler King' (Steve Mc Queen). With men like that on their side, how can they fail? In 'Von Ryan's Express' (1965), when US pilot Colonel Joseph Ryan (Frank Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a German POW camp, he is more concerned with his own survival than escape. The top-ranking officer in the camp, he is initially reviled by his fellow British and American prisoners, who nickname him 'Von Ryan'. However, Ryan eventually comes to lead them in a daring escape attempt, taking over from the commanding British officer (Trevor Howard) and the escapees face many hazards as they commandeer a train to make their way across Italy, closely followed by the Nazis. In 'The Sand Pebbles' (1966), in China, 1926, the US gunboat San Pablo cruises the Yangtze river on a peacekeeping mission. However, there is a traitor in their midst. 'The Dam Busters' (1954), adapted from the book by Paul Brickhill, is based on the true story of Dr Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave), whose invention of the 'Bouncing Bomb' is greeted with much scepticism. However, RAF Wing Commander Guy Gibson proves the bomb's worth in a daring mission to destroy the German Ruhr Dams. The film also stars Richard Todd and Ursula Jeans. Docu-drama 'The Colditz Story' (1954), adapted from the book by P.R. Reid, stars John Mills, Eric Portman and Lionel Jeffries, and re-tells the experiences of Allied prisoners-of-war who were held in Colditz Castle. These POWs were strictly monitored as they were a high risk category and had constantly tried to escape whichever prison they where previously placed in. Despite being outnumbered by their guards, the prisoners of Colditz continued to achieve their goal - freedom.

Collection of five classic war epics. 'Battle of the Bulge' (1965) is an account of Germany's last major European offensive of World War II at the Ardennes in Belgium, in December 1944. Germany, under the command of Hessler (Robert Shaw), plans an attack with the secret Panzer division, but they are desperately short of fuel and their immediate objective is to capture a big allied fuel deposit, without the allies knowing. Henry Fonda, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews co-star. 'Escape to Victory' (1981) focuses on a group of Nazi officers who come up with a propaganda event in which an all-star Nazi football team will play a match against Allied Prisoners of War. The prisoners agree, planning on using the game as a means of escape from the camp. In 'Kelly's Heroes' (1970) a group of soldiers led by Kelly (Clint Eastwood) capture a German general in occupied France during the Second World War. He reveals the location of a bank housing 14,000 bars of Nazi gold, which Kelly and his men set out to steal. The only problem is that the bank lies 30 miles behind enemy lines. In 'The Dirty Dozen' (1967), set in 1944, twelve Death Row convicts are selected by Major Reisman (Lee Marvin) for a suicide mission. With the aid of his assistant, Sergeant Bowren (Richard Jaeckel), Reisman gradually moulds his gang of murderers, rapists, thieves and psychotics into a tough fighting unit. He leads them into occupied France in an attempt to infiltrate a chateau where the Nazi top brass are holding a summit. Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987), set during the Vietnam War, details the dehumanising effect of military combat, as experienced by Vietnam conscripts under the training of sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). The second half of the film follows one of the recruits, Joker (Matthew Modine), onto the battlefield as he is thrown into the war at the height of the Tet Offensive.
