The Hornby Rail Road range presents the Virgin Train Class 47 Diesel Locomotive. This stylish and Virgin liveried locomotive is a perfect starter train for those beginning their voyage into the world of model railroads. Built between 1963 and 1967, the Class 47 Diesel Locomotive was intended as a direct replacement for the steam locomotives, which were withdrawn in the late 60s. After the privatisation of British Rail, Virgin operated the Class 47 under its own livery until the arrival of their Voyager trains. Suited to pulling passenger cars and freight, the Class 47 is the ideal accompaniment to any layout. Every model in the Rail Road range is fitted with efficient drive mechanisms and have pickups on all drive wheels ensuring smooth running. With the standard Hornby hook and bar type couplings, this locomotive will easily couple to the rolling stock in both the standard Hornby and Thomas and Friends ranges.

All in a fair condition. Yellowing to the pages and all still have their coloured covers attached. There is some tearing to the covers, with some having the corners missing.

The location sports a loop which provides excellent viewing for the study of both locomotives and rolling stock. This section will also provide you with a few surprises! Moving north to Barnetby this location must rank as a top hot spot for the pure freight enthusiast. We visited three locations in this area for non-stop rail action. We filmed the Class 56 hard at work together with Class 60s and 66s in wonderful afternoon sunshine. Filmed on separate days Linslade on the four track section of the West Coast Mainline sees a considerable amount of both freight and passenger trains including the celebrated Class 86s and 87s plus Virgin's newly introduced Class 390 Pendolinos. Also in this section you see the illusive Scotts sleeper and a Class 37 deputising for a Class 66 on a stone working. All this and much much more.

Firstly we travel to Southern France and take a look at the steam locomotives that are still in operation today. From the Brittany Peninuslar along the Channel Coast to Paris to Picardy. We see some fine examples of French steam including the famous Golden Arrow. In Dieppe we see a rail terminal that serves the main port. We take a close look at an extensive network of city trams in Brussels and later move on to a combination of steam electric and diesel used for heavy industry in Luxembourg. We visit E Class locomotives in Denmark and some pre-war designed locomotives in Italy. Three different types of gauge are on offer in Greece and we also travel to Turkey before finally ending our journey in Portugal. This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast Harry P. Dodge. Along with the rest of the series it provides the unique and incredible story of the world's railways in the '60s and early '70s.
