    Atlantic Soul 1959-75 (4cd) [limited]

    £39.99

In continued celebration of Atlantic Records' 60th anniversary, and the label's peerless soul-deep legacy, Rhino Handmade proudly issues the limited edition, four-disc boxed set ATLANTIC SOUL (1959-1975). It is the second of a trio of limited edition Rhino Handmade boxes saluting Atlantic's 60th - Atlantic Blues (1949-1970) was released in 2007, and this year brings Atlantic Vocal Groups (1951-1963). As with each box in the three-part series, ATLANTIC SOUL (1959-1975) is presented in a collectible sepia-toned 12 x 12" display box that includes an expansive booklet filled with in-depth liner notes and rare archival photos. Production is limited to 3,000 worldwide in individually numbered boxes available exclusively in the UK through www.rhino.co.uk.Because Soul era Atlantic - as guided by principals Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler - is so inextricably associated with the history and cultural mythology of soul music overall, many righteous compilations presenting the label's biggest hits and most prominent tracks are readily available for fans and collectors alike. For that reason, ATLANTIC SOUL (1959-1975) spotlights lesser-known and rarely heard treasures from Atlantic's vaunted vaults, presenting 82 tracks testifying to the rich depth and diversity of talent that comprised the soul music firmament on the label's roster. This unique set was compiled and produced by music historian Billy Vera, himself an Atlantic Records artist during part of the era covered. As Vera writes in the liner notes, “Some of the tracks here will be familiar while others are making their digital debut on CD. Either way, buckle your seatbelts for an emotion-filled ride on the Soul Train. You're going to hear some great, if little known songs, sung and played to perfection.” The box opens with The Genius, Ray Charles, delivering his masterful version of “Come Rain Or Come Shine.” It closes with the blue-eyed soul of Hall & Oates on “She's Gone” and the proto-disco fervor of The Trammp's “Hooked For Life.” In between, Vera's survey of many of soul's stealthiest stand-outs and best-kept secrets underscores the range and reach of the entire genre. From the orchestral soul of Ben E. King to the raw Detroit gospel of The Falcons, from the Southern funk of Memphis and Muscle Shoals to the 70s rejuvenation of the New York and Philly studio scenes, Atlantic wrote the book - and Rhino Handmade makes it possible for you to add it to your library. Naturally, no such collection would be complete without an entry from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, herself an awesome personification of soul's signature fusion of church-fueled vocals, secular songs and R&B grooves. She's represented with her stirring cover of “A Change Is Gonna Come,” paying tribute to fellow soul legend Sam Cooke. Other Atlantic soul icons featured include Solomon Burke, La Vern Baker, The Coasters, Sam & Dave, Donny Hathaway, Ben E., King, The Persuaders, Esther Phillips, “Wicked” Wilson Pickett and the inimitable Otis Redding, among others. While the songs may not be the time-honored classics you're used to hearing, the legendary voices are instantly recognizable. Also ripe for discovery are tracks by artists who made it big after they left Atlantic - including Patti La Belle and The Isley Brothers - and great voices whose day had come and gone but were still sounding smokin'- among them Howard Tate, James Carr and Baby Washington. And while names like Judy Clay or Soul Brothers Six might only be remembered by a few, once you've heard them you are unlikely to forget them.

Pressed on 180-Gram Vinyl, THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1967 - 1968 - available in a numbered boxed set edition limited to 5,000 copies - is the definitive collection of work from the original five-piece Bee Gees line-up that rose to global fame in the late 1960s with the release of these three classic albums. Singing siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb (the first letters of each word in Bee Gees - B & G - stand for “Brothers Gibb”), and Australian instrumentalists Vince Melouney and Colin Petersen launched the group's extraordinary musical output with Bee Gees' 1st, Horizontal and Idea, each now newly remastered and expanded as a double LP with rare and previously unreleased material. In all, this collectible box boasts 40 bonus tracks. The revisiting of this trio of seminal LPs marks the beginning of the first-ever restoration of the Bee Gees diverse catalog, which will ultimately be revitalized and upgraded from start to finish. It's also the first time the Bee Gees have opened their archives to mine rarities for such an ambitious endeavor. The first disc in each double-LP title features the original album; the second is packed with bonus material, much of it previously unissued. One of the most successful groups in popular music, the Bee Gees career spanned five decades, seven GRAMMYs - including prestigious Lifetime Achievement and Legend Awards - eight platinum albums, 60 charting singles and worldwide sales exceeding 175 million albums. The Bee Gees phenomenal success throughout the 1970s often obscures the fact that by the time the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever soundtrack transcended disco and redefined R&B dance music, the group already had more than ten albums and a string of worldwide hits under their then-sequined belts. A listen to the Bee Gees earliest recordings on THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1967 - 1968 proves that these most harmonious of brothers possessed the musical Midas touch from the very beginning. Fans agree - the companion CD boxed set, a 10,000 piece limited edition of this title, sold out within weeks of its release. Bee Gees' 1st, originally released in 1967, reached #7 on Billboard®'s Pop Album chart and delivered a trio of top 20 smashes: “To Love Somebody,” “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” and “Holiday.” Disc 2 features 14 previously unreleased tracks, including alternate versions of most of the album cuts plus the recorded debut of “Gilbert Green,” “House Of Lords,” “All Around The Clock,” and other ultra-rare treasures. Horizontal, which debuted in early 1968, introduced the signature hit “Massachusetts,” a chart-topper in Britain that went to #11 in the U.S., and the standouts “World” (a global hit), “Harry Braff” and the psychedelic title track. Disc 2 features thirteen rarities including nine previously unreleased tracks, among them “Out Of Line,” “All My Christmases Came At Once,” plus the medley “Silent Night/Hark The Herald Angels Sing,” one of only two cuts in the box that doesn't feature a Gibb writing credit. Idea followed in August 1968 and broke the Bee Gees into the top ten of the U.S. Billboard singles chart for the first time with the classics “I've Got To Get A Message To You” (#8) and “I Started A Joke” (#6). Disc 2 includes alternate mixes of “Idea,” “Kitty Can” and “Let There Be Love,” the film songs “Chocolate Symphony” and “Gena's Theme” plus two previously unissued Coca Cola commercials. These historic reissues look as good as they sound. Presented in deluxe packaging with three gatefold jackets, the LP's booklets feature many beautiful photos from the era and insightful liner notes by '60s sage Andrew Sandoval-including extensive new interviews with Barry and Robin Gibb on their career and music.

    Atlantic Blues (1949-1970) (4cd)

    £39.99

2007 marked the 60th anniversary of Atlantic Records, one of the most influential independent music companies of all time. Founded by a pair of jazz and blues aficionados -- the late Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson -- Atlantic quickly became the country's preeminent R&B label (in fact, longtime Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler is widely credited with coining the term “Rhythm & Blues”). Rhino Handmade pays tribute to the label's lasting legacy with Atlantic Blues (1949-1970), a 4-CD box set highlighting the wide variety of blues that found a home at Atlantic. Produced by Billy Vera, Atlantic Blues features 80 tracks culled from the label's ffirst four decades, featuring virtually every style of blues imaginable. From the down-home sounds of Blind Willie Mc Tell to the urban jump of Joe Morris, from male and female shouters like Joe Turner and La Vern Baker, to sophisticated instrumental work from the likes of Jimmy Yancey and T-Bone Walker, it's all here. Among the other artists featured on Atlantic Blues are New Orleans piano great Professor Longhair, Leadbelly, Jimmy Witherspoon, Champion Jack Dupree, Esther Phillips, Freddie King, and Otis Rush. Soul legends Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin also weigh in with several sides that showcase their skills as blues singers. The first of a trio of limited-edition boxed sets honoring genres championed by the label, ATLANTIC BLUES (1949-1970) is presented in a sepia-toned 12'' x 12'' box that includes a booklet filled with extensive liner notes and rare photos. Atlantic's very first hit -- Stick Mc Ghee and His Buddies' “Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” - was a blues record, and as this new Rhino Handmade collection convincingly demonstrates, both the music and the label built on it were made to last

Forever Changing: The Golden Age Of Elektra 1963-73 (5cd) (Ltd.)

    £99.99

An unprecedented five-disc boxed set, Forever Changing: The Golden Age Of Elektra Records—1963 to 1973, focuses on the heyday of the Elektra label as it made the transition from folk music to folk rock, before fully embracing electric rock. Forever Changing opens with pivotal early folk artists Judy Collins, Fred Neil, and Phil Ochs and sees the gradual impact of electric music with, first, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and then key signings to the label in Love, The Doors and the extraordinary, unique Tim Buckley. Elektra Records never lost its folk roots and, as the sixties progressed, the label embraced the singer/songwriter era by signing Carly Simon, Harry Chapin, and the hugely successful Bread. Yet in 1969, Elektra went on to release the debut albums by The Stooges and the MC5, groups which still make a fierce impact on young musicians to this day; a far cry from the pristine folk of Judy Collins. Elektra was the brainchild of Jac Holzman, and it was his vision that drove the label through 1973, when he handed over the reigns. A true visionary who believed in the artist and was never afraid to take risks, Holzman went from releasing traditional folk and exotic recordings in the ’50s to signing those truly trailblazing artists: Love, The Doors, Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, Phil Ochs, David Ackles and so many more. Forever Changing mixes these familiar names with a host of genuine rarities and lesser-knowns. Elektra’s reputation preceded it and helped give maverick artists such as Nico, The Holy Holy Modal Rounders, David Peel and the UK-signed psychedelic folk group The Incredible String Band a launchpad to wider recognition. A bonus disc, titled 'Another Time, Another Place,’ presents an alternative take on Elektra’s history, from the rare 1963 single by The Beefeaters (who went on to become The Byrds), through one of Jac Holzman’s final signings, Jobriath. This disc also includes Eric Clapton & Powerhouse, The Baroque Beatles Book, Simon Stokes, Joseph Spence, Eclection, Leviathan, Goodthunder and David Peel. The booklet includes a special foreword by Jac Holzman and new interviews with the artists, where possible, plus contributions from Elektra insiders, fellow artists and fellow travelers for whom Elektra was and still is the label. Forever Changing is housed in a sumptuous 12-inch box that includes, among other delights, a lavishly illustrated hardback book to accompany the discs, four fine art prints of classic Elektra sleeves, a set of postcards, scrapbook style facsimile memorabilia, an illustrated discography, and a CD-Rom copy of Jac Holzman and Gavan Daw’s autobiography and label history 'Follow The Music'.

Queen Of Soul - (4cd Box)

    £39.99

“With her switch to Atlantic in 1966,” notes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its web page chronicling Franklin's 1987 induction, “Aretha proceeded to revolutionize soul music with some of the genre's greatest recordings.” Aretha was crowned “The Queen Of Soul” during her extraordinary twelve years at the label, and her much-deserved coronation gives this expansive and essential boxed set its title. In turn, QUEEN OF SOUL - THE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS gives her transcendent and influential body of work from those phenomenal years the “Respect” it's due, spotlighting 86 definitive tracks on 4 CDs. Jerry Wexler, who signed Aretha to the label and helped guide her evolution into one of the most important music artists of our time, was actively involved with the creation of QUEEN OF SOUL - THE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS. In the GRAMMY®winning liner notes for the elegantly presented 6” x 12” box, which was originally released in '92, he writes: “Genius is the world. Clearly, Aretha was continuing what Ray Charles had begun - the secularization of gospel, turning church into rhythms, churn patterns, and especially church feelings into personalized love songs. Like Ray, Aretha was a hands-on performer, a two-fisted pianist plugged into the main circuit of Holy Ghost power...she remained the central orchestrator of her own sound, the essential contributor and final arbiter of what did and did not fit with her musical persona.” In a December, 1992 review of QUEEN OF SOUL for the New York Times, Jon Pareles seconded the emotion, writing that, “A great singer, potent songs, a hot band, a smart producer and the right historical moment - they all came together when Aretha Franklin moved from Columbia Records to Atlantic...The voice that had grown up in gospel and detoured into pop ballads found its wings singing “Respect,” “A Natural Woman,” “Chain Of Fools” and other songs where the elemental power of blues and gospel was poured into statements about secular love, hope and desire.” The aforementioned classics plus a wealth of other hits, signature songs, definitive album tracks and lesser-known singles spanning Aretha's peak decade of 1967-1976 are the core of the 86 bursts of musical brilliance on this four-disc retrospective. Other highlights include Aretha's first Atlantic side - and #1 R&B/#9 pop hit - “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” and the GRAMMY-winning singles “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Master Of Eyes (The Deepness Of Your Eyes)” and “Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing” (“Respect” and “Chain Of Fools” were also among her GRAMMY winners). Also featured are Aretha essentials including “Young, Gifted And Black,” “Do Right Woman - Do Right Man,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Rock Steady” and a reprise of “Spirit In The Dark” featuring the Queen of Soul with Ray Charles. In addition to Jerry Wexler's notes, the box's deluxe booklet features contributions from Dave Marsh, David Ritz, Thulani Davis, Ahmet Ertegun, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin. It also compiles a number of quotes from Aretha herself, including a comment to Newsweek from 1967 - the year her chart dominion as an Atlantic Records artist began - that soul is, “the ability to make other people feel what you're feeling. It's hard to laugh when you want to cry. Some people can hide it. I can't, so when I sing, it doesn't come across fake.” In 1991, she told VH-1, “I think soul is certainly a feeling that is transmitted in one way or another...it's something that's very empathetic and it's deep. Soul is deep.” Explore just how deep as Sister Re socks it to you with hours of feeling on ARETHA FRANKLIN: QUEEN OF SOUL - THE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS

Rhino and Elektra Records salute the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest rock bands of all time with 'Perception'. The 6-CD/6-DVD boxed set presents all of The Doors' classic studio albums with legendary vocalist Jim Morrison, each supplemented with rare and unreleased audio and video tracks. Perception was produced in cooperation with surviving band members John Densmore (drums), Robby Krieger (guitar), and Ray Manzarek (keyboards), with The Doors' longtime engineer Bruce Botnick back behind the boards. Each of the six albums is presented with bonus audio -- much of it previously unreleased -- on a remastered CD along with an additional DVD including a 5.1 DTS encoded Surround Sound mix of the album and additional tracks as well as a photo gallery, lyrics, and discography, and two videos of songs from that album. One of the most impressive debuts in rock history, The Doors (1967) was as commercially successful as it was musically daring, with the signature single ""Light My Fire"" reaching #1 on the singles chart (the LP spent more than two years on the album chart, eventually going double platinum). Bonus material includes two takes of ""Moonlight Drive,"" a previously unreleased version of ""Indian Summer,"" the promotional video of ""Break On Through (To The Other Side),"" and a Canadian television broadcast of ""The End"" from Toronto in 1967. Strange Days (1967) capped The Doors' breakthrough year in fine form, with ""People Are Strange"" narrowly missing the Billboard Top 10. Among the extras are previously unissued takes of that hit (including false starts and dialogue) and ""Love Me Two Times."" ""Love Me Two Times"" and the album's closer, ""When The Music's Over"" are seen on the DVD in live performances taped in Europe in 1968. The chart-topping Waiting For The Sun (1968) opens with one of the band's most irresistible pop singles (and their second #1 hit), ""Hello, I Love You,"" before delving into darker terrain. Audio extras include previously unreleased dialogue and two alternate takes of ""Not To Touch The Earth"" plus the group's interpretation of Tommaso Albinoni's classical composition ""Adagio In G Minor"" and the 17-minute epic work-in-progress ""Celebration Of The Lizard."" The DVD features footage of ""Spanish Caravan"" from The Doors' storied 1968 gig at the Hollywood Bowl, and a Danish TV performance from that year of ""The Unknown Soldier."" The Soft Parade (1969) showed the group's willingness to explore more elaborate arrangements including strings and horns; one of those sonic experiments, ""Touch Me,"" became a #3 hit. An unreleased take and studio dialogue of that single, plus the previously unheard ""Push Push,"" two takes of ""Whiskey, Mystics And Men"" and ""Who Scared You"" are among the audio tracks added. Rounding things out are video performances of the album's title track and ""Tell All The People"" taped for New York's WNET-TV in 1969. Morrison Hotel (1970) was issued in the wake of Jim's notorious Miami bust for indecent exposure and shows The Doors battling back with such powerful broadsides as ""Roadhouse Blues."" Eight previously unissued takes of that song are among the many bonus tracks included here, along with never-before-heard versions of ""Peace Frog,"" ""The Spy,"" the intriguingly titled ""Money Beats Soul,"" and a quick run through of Chuck Berry's ""Carol."" Music videos of ""Roadhouse Blues"" and ""Wild Child"" are tenants of the Morrison Hotel DVD. L.A. Woman (1971) was released just a couple of months before Morrison's untimely -- and still mysterious -- death in Paris. The album includes some of his most visionary lyrics, including the hits ""Love Her Madly"" and ""Riders On The Storm."" ""Orange County Suite"" and ""(You Need Meat) Don't Go No Further"" appear as additional audio, with a music vid

Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970 (4cd)

    £39.99

The only thing that doesn't come with this unprecedented, multi-artist 4 CD boxed set chronicling the San Francisco sound of the 1960s is the flowers for your hair! Released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the psychedelic, free-spirited Summer Of Love - that began just after the historic Monterey Pop Festival in June '67 - LOVE IS THE SONG WE SING: SAN FRANCISCO NUGGETS 1965 - 1970 weighs in at 77 tracks totalling over 4 hours of music. Four decades ago, legions of young people trekked to San Francisco and its famed Haight Asbury district, the epicentre for the youth-driven counterculture revolution that was transforming American culture. They came for peace, politics, community, love...and they came for the music, the most enduring legacy of that very special place and time. It has proven to be the element that really tells the true story of San Francisco in the 1960s. The city, and the Bay Area overall, were exploding with spectacular talent, including pre-eminent icons the Grateful Dead, Santana and the Jefferson Airplane as well as countless other acts that brought San Francisco's expansive sonic vibe to national, and ultimately worldwide, prominence. And, just as aspiring hippies and youthful seekers of summer lovin' flocked westward to savour the Golden State's golden age, musical talent from across the country descended on the City by the Bay including Texan Janis Joplin and Chicagoan Steve Miller. They all added to the amazing stash of sounds that remains a cornerstone of contemporary music, and they're all featured here, superstars and lesser known talents alike. The set's four discs explore this musical phenomenon from diverse vantage points for a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry that is both vintage and timeless. Disc 1, “Seismic Rumbles,” maps the divergent fault lines separating the tradition pop flavours of the early 1960s from San Francisco's emerging bands that were inspired by the more complex rock and roll of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Highlights include “Can't Come Down” from Dead precursors The Warlocks, the demo for Quicksilver Messenger Service's “Who Do You Love,” the earliest incarnation of the Airplane on “It's No Secret,” “I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag” from Country Joe & The Fish and “Mr. Jones (A Ballad Of A Thin Man)” from a prehistoric Grass Roots ensemble. Disc 2, “Suburbia,” takes a trip to the nearby burgs of Berkeley, Sausalito, Sacramento, and San Jose to explore the garage, folk-rock, and musically-hybrid psychotic reactions to San Francisco's psychedelic stew. Stand-out tracks include Teddy & His Patches “Suzy Creamcheese,” The Chocolate Watchband's “No Way Out,” and Frumious Bandersnatch's “Hearts To Cry.” Disc 3, “Summer Of Love,” celebrates the myriad riches of that era-defining season, featuring classics from iconic artists including Jefferson Airplane's “White Rabbit,” Santana's “Soul Sacrifice,” the Dead's “The Golden Road,” and Grace Slick and The Great! Society's “Somebody To Love.” Plus Moby Grape's “Omaha,” Blue Cheer's “Summertime Blues,” Sly & The Family Stone's “Underdog,” The Charlatans' “Alabama Bound” and the Steve Miller Band's “Roll With It.” Disc 4, “The Man Can't Bust Our Music,” charts the visionary artistry and mind-blowing evolution of the maturing San Francisco sound - an epic musical wellspring that changed the course of rock and roll and gave birth to freeform FM radio. Stand-out tracks, among the greatest in 20th century rock, include Santana's “Evil Ways,” Janis' “Mercedes Benz,” “White Bird” from It's A Beautiful Day and the Dead's “Dark Star.” The 4-disc compilation, produced by rock historian Alec Palao, comes in the form of a deluxe hardbound book with 120 pages of sumptuous, rarely seen photos, plus track no

Rhino Handmade's celebration of Atlantic Records' 60th anniversary will have you in clover with ATLANTIC VOCAL GROUPS, a limited edition, four-disc boxed set bursting with song. Produced by Billy Vera-who also penned historical liner notes-the compilation spans 1951-1963, spotlighting eighty-two harmonic gems, doo wop classics, jumping rockers and more. Among the bounty are hits and lesser known sides alike, all chronicling Atlantic's enduring legacy with respect to the vocal group art form. The box's four discs are individually titled and distinctive in the ground they cover:Disc 1 - "Jumpin' & Bluesy" opens with three tracks from The Clovers. Brought to Atlantic by a friend of Ahmet Ertegun's they became the label's first successful vocal group, repeatedly hitting the charts. It closes with Atlantic's answer to the "bird group" craze as The Cardinals deliver a rare uptempo track on a cover of The Wrens' "Come Back My Love." In between are treasures including several sides from The Drifters featuring Clyde Mc Phatter as well as vintage grooves from The Chords, The Regals and The Playboys.Disc 2 - "Slow & Dreamy" also opens with The Clovers, playing up their smooth, balladeering side with "Skylark" and "Needless. Other highlights include "The Way I Feel," the sublime flip side of the first Atlantic release from The Drifters featuring Clyde Mc Phatter as well as soulful numbers from The Diamonds, The Chordcats, The Sensations featuring Tommy Wicks and other great groups.Disc 3 - "The Rock 'n' Roll Era" rockets in with The Drifters' "Ruby Baby"-with Johnny Moore on lead vocals-and later features a solo Clyde Mc Phatter serving up a righteous cover of "Long Lonely Nights." Stand-outs also include "Brazil," a rare cut from The Coasters, the hit "Mr. Lee" from East Harlem female doo wop outfit The Bobettes, "Hey Baby Baby" from Philly's The Castelles and The Penguins' "Pledge Of Love."Disc 4 - "Group Revival" features an assortment of later tracks from groups including The Vibraharps and The Versatones-both Philly-based-The Skyliners, The Crescendos and The Coasters. Also spotlighted are several Phil Spector-produced sides by former Valiants lead singer Billy Storm that capitalized on the circa-'61 oldies craze. The influence and popularity of vocal groups waned as the '60s music scene was revolutionized in myriad ways, but it remains a cornerstone of 20th century popular music. ATLANTIC VOCAL GROUPS both salutes the phenomenon and continues a series of limited edition Rhino Handmade boxes honoring Atlantic's 60th anniversary. In 2007, Atlantic Blues (1949-1970) and Atlantic Soul (1959-1975) were released. As with each previous box, ATLANTIC VOCAL GROUPS is presented in a collectible sepia-toned 12'' x 12'' display box including an expansive booklet packed with rare archival photos. Production is limited to 3,000 individually numbered boxes available exclusively through www.rhino.co.uk
