If this training is done carefully, steadily and systematically then the child at the age of 11 will have acquired the standard of attainment in the basic "three R's" education which will enable him to take full advantage at once of the secondary education considered by experts and agreed by you to be most suitable for him. HOW ASSESSMENTS ARE MADE Tests similar to those suggested in this book are necessary to assess attainment. They may be set formally or informally. ARITHMETIC A sound knowledge of the simpler methods used in arithmetic including uses of fractions and especially decimals. The change over to decimals and metric systems generally and the use of the 24-hr clock must be an integral part of his training. ENGLISH Vocabulary, sentence formation and ability to read and interpret the written word are readily tested. Oral work becomes more and more important and the C.S.E. and G.C.E. examinations both test oral ability because most of us communicate thoughts orally more frequently than by writing. Both Arithmetic and English are examined in tests which usually last about 45 minutes and the results are very carefully assessed by experts. Borderline cases are considered most carefully. INTELLIGENCE These tests are many and varied and this book gives several opportunities of tackling the many different kinds of problems and situations. Children will have been tested on these lines throughout their primary schools, and a most valuable part of selection for suitable secondary education is the assessment of primary teachers and head teachers over a period of years. It is, however, essential that the child should also be compared with children of the same age group who have come from other primary schools and who will be his classmates in the secondary school. The tests are essential so that children of similar attainment and ability should be taught together. Obviously read but a clean text, plastic covered hardcover with some wear, very good copy. Perhaps as a nostalgic gift?
