This autobiography of Sir Harry Smith, Baronet of Aliwal on the Sutlej, covers the period 1787 to 1860. Until 1829 his responsibility was small, but thereafter he had a large or paramount share in directing the operations in which he was engaged. The autobiography was originally entitled "Various Anecdotes and Events of my Life" but ended in 1846, some 14 years before his death. The present Editor contributed subsequent chapters. The campaigns included in the account range from the Americas to Europe, Africa and India. Published in this one-volume edition 1903 by John Murray, London. pp815: 8.5" x 6" including several b/w illustrations. Text in good condition, page edges show signs of shelf wear: title page and eps lightly foxed. fep shows ink stamp from "Ton-Fanau Camp". Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and gilt military crest is bumped, marked and worn.

BOOK DESCRIPTION : 1829, Robert Jennings, London; half-leather hardback; comprising 2 volumes bound into 1 of 574+ pages & 908+ pages respectively (1,482 pages altogether); with illustrations to both volumes drawn and engraved, and under the direction of, William Deeble; volume 1 includes a foldaway map of the county; in Good Overall Condition. The Reverend Moore made extensive research for his grand and far-reaching design of compiling one of the first comprehensive histories of the county of Devon. His resources were many existing and valuable publications, and he also made his own investigations of a county which he admired for its beautiful scenery, its great antiquities, and the important role it played in vital moments in the history of the realm of Britain. His synopsis of the history is as follows : The topics treated shall be : "The description of the county's surface, followed by a general history, ancient and modern; together with an account of Devon's antiquities, its geological features, natural history, rural economy, and the state of trade and commerce; it's ecclesiastical history, a general biography, and brief histories of the nobility and distinguished families connected with the county; and finally, a particular and historical description of the different towns, sea-ports, harbours, curiosities, etc. including every topic of general interest which a parochial survey can supply". Book 4 - Agriculture and Products, Manufactures, Trade & Commerce; The History of Mining and the Minerals. Volume 2 - Book 1 - Biography - from the Saxon Period to the Time of the Reformation; from the Reformation to the Revolution; from the Revolution to the Present. BOOK CONDITION : Good Overall Condition : cover hinges to boards are cracked and loose but covers still holding; some edgewear; some wear to corner tips of covers; mild general rubbing; leather at spine in quite good shape and titling very clear; with exceptions to follow, the inside pages are in very good plus condition with whites and tones very well preserved (minor faults are - corner creasing to title page at top, small ink stain to page 1, toning to page 574 and map, map with small edge tears (a couple of which have been repaired with translucent tape on the reverse of the map), toning to page 1 of Volume 2, negligible and extremely infrequent very minor foxing); the binding to the body of the book is very compact, strong and secure. ----- Bookseller Inventory 001507

This is a Rare Book Reprint No. 22 edited by William Ouseley in 1829 and reprinted by the Lebanese Library, Beirut in 1972. The book is an account by Burckhardt, the Swiss orientalist, of 'those territories in Hedjaz which the Mohammedans regard as scared.' Illustrated with black and white detailed diagrams and maps this is one of a series of works by Burckhardt which were published by the London African Association. Internally this copy is in as new condition, the dust jacket shows signs of ware with some small tears and there is some spotting in the top edge.
